Centiva Case Studies

Empire State Building

A quality experience born of innovative Art Deco design provides the keynote for the high-profile project of the Empire State Building. With 3.5 million visitors a year, the Empire State Building needed a floor that was durable, easy to look after, price appropriate, and one that would maintain the Art Deco design theme.

For this busy environment, Jeter, Cook & Jepson Architects of Hartford, CT set about to create an interesting floor that would honor their client's requests.  A multi-colored chevron floor design was easily achieved with the Centiva product line-Magics. Bob Burling, principal of Jeter, Cook & Jepson Architects stated, “The coloration and surface texture we used, in a chevron pattern on the 45 degree axis to the building combined very nicely with the other “deco-style” elements, especially the railing system. JCJ has been very pleased with the color and texture choices available in the Centiva line.

Working with our distributor in NYC, JCJ chose Centiva Magics in 12x12 and 18x18 tiles with a slate surface texture. These products were strategically placed to create the unusual design on the floor. Magics, a homogeneous product by Centiva is one of the most durable flooring products on the market.  JCJ's Bob Burling states, “We love the floor and the way it looks, even now, some months and many thousand of feet that have trodden over it already. The ESB staff always loved the look and is now learning that it does not require an unusual amount of daily maintenance." The logo that you see here was designed specially for the Empire State Building by Centiva. It can be seen close to the ticket counter by each person taking the tour of the building. Each individual window (just under 2,000) was carefully drawn in CAD by the cutting design department of Centiva. Then it was carefully cut using our state of the art cutting machine (The Ultrasonic Knife).

Bob Burling states, “The overall aesthetic for the project was to build upon the rich art-deco history of the original building design while providing a new palette of color and material to act  as a compliment to the storyline presented during the visitors experience.” Centiva is excited to be a part of this high-profile renovation.
